โ€œToday was one of those days in my teaching career that will stay with me forever. My year 11 Geography class held a live zoom call with โ€˜JRโ€™ a Ham Radio operator from Haiti. A real life hero. JR was the first person to send out a message to the rest of the world after the 7.0 Earthquake struck in 2010. My Uncle Bill Sturridge in Florida was the first to hear his Mayday call. Between them they coordinated rescue efforts that helped save countless lives.

My students showed the utmost respect for JR throughout the Q&A and were visibly moved by his story of courage and tragedy. We are grateful for his generosity to share his account of such an important time in the history of Haiti.โ€
