Dear Parents and Carers

NEU Day of action – Thursday 2 March 2023

The school will be closed to all students on this day, except for Year 11 students taking Mock Exams

As you may be aware from the national news coverage, one of the main teachers’ unions, the NEU, has called a national teachers strike for Thursday 2 March 2023.

From information previously provided by the unions, I am aware that I have a majority of staff who are members of the main union taking strike action.

This call to strike places me in a difficult position for the following reasons:

  • I am not legally allowed to know which members of my staff are members of the unions or whether they intend to follow their unions instructions and strike on 2 March
  • Without knowing which teachers will be absent from work on that day, it is impossible to plan an effective response which will guarantee that the school can stay open as normal
  • I am not allowed to ask non-striking teachers to cover classes for those staff who are out on strike

At present, I have to consider two options –

  1. That a significant number of teachers will join the strike and I will have to close the school to students for the day
  2. That we will have to effect a partial closure, only opening the school to some students

We have received information from NEU members today, which now makes it impossible to open the school to students on 2 March 2023.

We will continue with the Year 11 Mock Exams and so all Year 11 students who have an exam on Thursday need to attend. A further message will follow with details.

The dispute is at national level, between the public sector unions and the government, and is not between our staff and the school. Obviously, my primary concern is for the safety of the students and this has driven my decision to close the school.

Students should continue with their studies at home and English, Maths and Science work will be signposted via Bromcom. Please check that your child can login to Bromcom to access their work. Any problems please contact or ask your child to visit the IT department at break or lunchtime.

Please be assured that this decision has not been taken lightly and accept my apologies for any inconvenience which it causes to you and your family.

Many thanks for your continued support.
